Starting signal for ‘dual practical work-based learning’: our commitment to the future
In order to give pupils a realistic insight into various professions and companies at an early stage, the model project ‘Dual work-based learning’ was launched at Magdeburg's ‘Regine Hildebrandt’ integrated comprehensive school (IGS) at the start of the new school year.
On 12 August, the kick-off event for the ‘work-based learning’ model project took place in Magdeburg City Hall with the participation of Mayor Simone Borris. Alex Weise and Aaron Jahn were there on behalf of our company to recruit potential future trainees. Four students are expected to start with us at the beginning of September.
As part of the ‘work-based learning’ programme, pupils in year 9 at the IGS ‘Regine Hildebrandt’ will spend one fixed day per school week learning in a regional company or other institution rather than at school. At this extracurricular place of learning, the pupils gain practical work experience and an insight into technical, economic or domestic work processes, allowing them to test themselves in a variety of ways. They can apply and expand their school knowledge in work-related situations.
At the kick-off event in the town hall, the pupils of the IGS ‘Regine Hildebrandt’ and the representatives of the companies and organisations involved in the project got to know each other. The pupils gained an impression of the participating companies and were given suggestions as to the area in which they would like to complete the ‘dual practical learning’ programme. For the companies, the main question was which student would be the best fit for them.
The pupils then assessed their strengths and compared them with the requirements of the participating companies. The aim is to find the most suitable practical learning locations for the pupils based on these results. The ‘dual practical learning’ programme will then begin at the start of September with the weekly learning day in the respective companies. In total, over 20 companies and organisations from all over the city are taking part. This ensures that each of the 24 students finds a perfect practical partner.
The Mayor of Magdeburg, Simone Borris, is also convinced of the importance of the project for the Magdeburg region.
She said:
‘With "work-based Learning”, we are breaking new ground in career guidance together with the companies and the school and are actively involved in promoting young talent. As the pupils spend a longer period of time in the company, they can familiarise themselves with work processes in greater depth. The longer relationship with the company enables them to get to know and understand processes better, but also to realistically review mutual expectations, which will hopefully lead to one or two apprenticeships.’
